Current Form & Team News

South Africa

After the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, virtually everyone agreed that the South Africans had little to no chance at the 2026 World Cup. They lost the match 0–2, with Bafana Bafana also picking up two red cards. However, following a creditable 1–1 draw against the Czech Republic and an incredible 1–0 victory over South Korea, Hugo Broos’s side have managed to turn things around. In fact, with Canada as their next opponent, reaching the round of 16 is certainly not out of the question.

Canada

Canada are enjoying a World Cup to dream of. Never before have the North Americans picked up a point at the World Cup. During this tournament, they drew 1–1 with Bosnia, before sending Qatar home with a resounding 6–0 defeat. Jonathan David, in particular, has shown what he is capable of and now has three goals to his name. However, they could be even stronger, provided Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is declared fit. He has yet to feature in the tournament. Will we see him back in action against South Africa?

Head-to-Head

Just under 20 years ago, South Africa and Canada played their only international match against each other. It was a friendly that ended in a 2-0 victory for the South Africans.

Predicted line-ups

South Africa (4-2-3-1):

Williams, Modiba, Mbokazi, Okon, Mudau, Sithole, Mbatha, Appollis, Mofokeng, Maseko, Makgopa

Canada (4-4-2):

South Africa v Canada betting tips

Betting tip 1: Canada to win

We believe Canada will come out on top in this match. Firstly, because, even though they are playing in the United States, they are the hosts. Furthermore, they have so far shown themselves to be a strong side, having beaten Qatar 6-0, amongst other results. We believe Jesse March’s team will come out on top. A win for Canada will earn you odds of 1.70 at Oranje Palace.

Betting tip 2: Evidence Makgopa to have more than 0.5 shots on target

One of the players South African fans can expect to score is Evidence Makgopa. The 26-year-old Orlando Pirates striker has yet to score, but in his last two matches, against the Czech Republic and South Korea, he managed at least one shot on target in each game. We think he’ll be a threat against Canada too. Betting on Evidence Makgopa to have more than 0.5 shots on target at Oranje Palace gives you odds of 2.17.

South Africa v Canada Prediction

** Final score: South Africa 1–2 Canada **
This is the sort of match that certainly won’t meet the average football fan’s expectations, but we still expect an entertaining and, above all, thrilling encounter. One in which we believe Canada will come out on top.
