United States v Bosnia-Herzegovina preview
The United States and Bosnia-Herzegovina are set to face each other in the round of 16 at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco. The Americans qualified as group winners, but ended the group stage with a 3-2 defeat to Turkey. Bosnia won their final group match 3-1 against Qatar, thereby securing their place in the knockout stages. Here’s a brief look at both nations.
Current Form & Team News
United States
The United States initially made an excellent impression in the group stage. Mauricio Pochettino’s side began with a convincing 4–1 victory over Paraguay, followed by a solid 2–0 win against Australia. In their final group match against Turkey, the tournament hosts showed a different side to their game, losing to Turkey. Nevertheless, a number of players were rested, and Team USA look set to field their strongest starting eleven against Bosnia once again. Will players such as Balogun, Dest and Tillman make the difference?
Bosnia
Bosnia and Herzegovina had an inconsistent group stage. Sergej Barbarez’s side began with a 1-1 draw against Canada and then lost 4-1 to Switzerland. As a result, they had to beat Qatar to retain any chance of a place in the last 32. This proved successful, as the Qataris were sent home with a 1–3 defeat. That proved enough to reach the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams. Kerim Alajbegović’s goal was particularly interesting, as he is only 18 years old. Can he lead his country to victory once again on the US west coast?
Head-to-Head
The United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina have faced each other twice in friendly internationals. In 2013, the US won 4-3, whilst Bosnia and Herzegovina came out on top 1-0 in 2021. The two countries have never faced each other at a World Cup or European Championship.
Predicted line-ups
United States (4-3-3):
Freese, Robinson, Ream, Freeman, Dest, Adams, Richards, Tilman, Pulisic, Balogun, McKennie
Bosnia (4-4-2):
Vasilj, Kolasinac, Muharemovic, Katic, Dedic, Memic, Tahirovic, Basic, Alajbegovic, Dzeko, Demirovic
United States - Bosnia betting tips
Betting tip 1: Over 2.5 goals
The United States impressed during the group stage with their attacking play and have already scored several goals. Bosnia and Herzegovina also showed they can find the net with ease, but looked vulnerable at the back. This makes an open match with plenty of chances a likely prospect. We therefore expect goals. Over 2.5 goals offers odds of 1.75.
Betting tip 2: To score a goal – Folarin Balogun
Folarin Balogun has established himself as the United States’ first-choice striker. The forward has scored twice in two matches and looked fit, sharp and a constant threat in the opposition’s penalty area. With his pace and eye for goal, he is once again an excellent candidate to find the net. We therefore expect another goal from the AS Monaco striker. A goal from Folarin Balogun will earn you odds of 1.94.
Prediction: United States v Bosnia
** Final score: United States 3–1 Bosnia **
The United States have made a strong impression in the group stage and look ready for the real thing. Bosnia and Herzegovina will undoubtedly put up a fight, but the Americans have more quality and attacking firepower. We expect a convincing 3-1 victory for the home side.
