Qatar v Switzerland preview

For Qatar, the 2026 World Cup marks their second appearance at a World Cup finals. However, they are making history, as this is the first time they have qualified in their own right. Just under four years ago, the oil-rich nation hosted the 2022 World Cup, where they were drawn in the same group as the Netherlands. It was anything but a success, but it is clear that Julen Lopetegui’s side has developed considerably. Even if it’s only because of the presence of a big-name coach. Will that be enough to perhaps secure their first ever point at a World Cup?

Switzerland always tends to be a mid-table team at World Cups. They almost always progress to the next round and are capable of beating a major side. And yet they never really go far in the tournament. This year, the group stage looks like a walk in the park for the Alpine nation. The question, of course, is: can Murat Yakin’s team live up to this unexpected role as favourites? Especially now that Xherdan Shaqiri, who always shines at World Cups, is no longer in the squad.

Qatar v Switzerland prediction

If there’s one thing the Qataris are hoping for, it’s a striker like Ruud van Nistelrooy or Karim Benzema. Their goal-scoring record is, after all, extremely poor. For example, they’ve only managed to score once in their last five international matches. They failed to score against countries such as El Salvador, Ireland, Tunisia and Palestine. As far as we’re concerned, they won’t manage it against Switzerland either. Under 0.5 goals for Qatar gives you odds of 1.60.

Qatar v Switzerland odds

Playing two halves and scoring twice. You can safely say you’re in fine form. We’re talking about Dan Ndoye, the Swiss striker for Nottingham Forest. We reckon he’ll score against Qatar too, something he did last week against both Australia and Jordan. Another goal from Dan Ndoye will earn you odds of 2.17 at Oranje Palace.

Qatar v Switzerland: predicted line-ups

Below are the expected line-ups for both teams:

Qatar (4-3-3): Abunad, Al-Amin, Khouki, Miguel, A. Oui, Laye, Fathi, Abdulsallam, Junior, Afif, Abdurisag
