It still sounds a bit strange to hear, but we’ve reached Group J at the 2026 World Cup. This is, of course, mainly due to the presence of a total of 48 teams. One of the consequences of the World Cup’s expansion is that Jordan is able to take part. In their first ever World Cup match, they will face Austria, who are always a tough side to play against. Can the Alpine nation live up to their role as favourites? Or will Jordan spring a minor surprise? Here is our Austria v Jordan prediction.

About two years ago, Austria made a name for themselves with some excellent results at Euro 2024. Among other things, they beat Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands side 3–2. Unfortunately for them, they were knocked out by Turkey not long after. In the years that followed, however, they performed surprisingly well. The qualifiers went smoothly, whilst preparations for the 2026 World Cup also went extremely well. In those matches, they beat both South Korea and Tunisia 1–0. Can they do the same against Jordan?

As mentioned, this is Jordan’s first appearance at the World Cup. They survived a qualifying campaign against countries such as Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine and Uzbekistan. However, their pre-tournament form suggests they are among the ‘minnows’ at the 2026 World Cup. They suffered a 1-4 defeat against Switzerland last week, whilst a few days later Colombia proved too strong, winning 2-0. Their last victory dates back as far as 2025, when they beat Saudi Arabia 1-0. Can they pull off a surprise against Austria?

National coach Ralf Rangnick’s side are in good form. During their pre-tournament friendlies, they recorded 1-0 victories over South Korea and Tunisia, among others. With players such as Marcel Sabitzer, David Alaba, Konrad Laimer and Marko Arnautović, they have more than enough quality and experience to dominate this match.

Jordan

Jordan are real underdogs. They qualified in impressive fashion, but their preparations have been difficult, including a 1–4 defeat to Switzerland and a 0–2 loss to Colombia. The team are physically strong and disciplined, but struggle to score against stronger opponents.
