What a celebration it was in Cairo last week. The ‘curse of the Egyptians’ and the 2026 World Cup are finally over. The match against New Zealand got off to a very slow start, but they still managed to win 3–1. Iran, on the other hand, played an excellent match against Belgium and now have two points from two games. They therefore know that a win against Egypt will be enough to secure a place in the next round of the World Cup. We’ll tell you more about this match and give you our Egypt v Iran prediction.

Egypt v Iran preview
Will Egypt clinch top spot in the group with a win over Iran? Or will the Iranians rise to the occasion and defeat the North Africans? Read on to find out more about both teams, with a view, of course, to the decisive match in Group G.
Current Form & Team News
Egypt
Mohammed Salah must have slept so well last Monday evening. The former Liverpool player proved decisive with a goal and an assist, convincingly propelling his country into the next round. And that’s fantastic news, because Egypt are the record holders of the Africa Cup of Nations, yet have never enjoyed success at a World Cup. Another notable moment was Hamza Abdelkarim’s cameo appearance. The 18-year-old Barcelona B player has virtually no experience at the highest level, yet was still given the chance to come on as a substitute at the world’s biggest football tournament. In fact, he came remarkably close to scoring a goal.
Iran
For Iran, this is certainly a special World Cup. The country is in a state of considerable unrest, which is having an impact on the team’s stay in the United States. As far as results are concerned, Amir Ghalenoei’s side are in a good position. They had actually hoped to beat New Zealand, but a point against Belgium is an excellent result. As a result, the Asians have qualification for the next round entirely in their own hands, as a win against Egypt would see the Iranians progress to the last 32.
Head-to-Head
One might expect Egypt and Iran to have quite a history between them. In football, that is. However, the two countries have never played an international match against each other. Therefore, there is nothing to say about their head-to-head record.
Predicted line-ups
Egypt (4-3-3):
Shobeir, Fatouh, Fathy, Ibrahim, Hany, Attia, Ashour, Lasheen, Trezeguet, Marmoush, Salah
Iran (4-3-3):
Beiranvand, Mohammadi, Nemati, Khalilzadeh, Hardani, Ezatolahi, Taremi, Ghoddos, Mohebi, Taheri, Gholizadeh
Egypt v Iran betting tips
Betting tip 1: Over 2.5 goals
We expect an exciting, entertaining match with a lot at stake. Iran, who play an attacking style, usually produce interesting matches, with the 2-2 draw against New Zealand being the best example. Furthermore, the match between Egypt and New Zealand was also a joy to watch. That’s why we expect at least three goals in this match. Over 2.5 goals gives you odds of 2.75 at Oranje Palace.
Betting tip 2: Saeid Ezatolahi to have more than 0.5 shots on target
When watching Iran’s matches, we pay a little closer attention to Saeid Ezatolahi’s performances. The Iranian midfielder had a shot on target against both New Zealand and Belgium. We think he’ll have another go against Egypt and find the back of the net. A shot on target by Saeid Ezatolahi will earn you odds of 3.40 at Oranje Palace.
Egypt v Iran Prediction
** Final score: Egypt 1–1 Iran**
We think this match will remain evenly balanced, meaning Iran will also win their third match of the 2026 World Cup. This is particularly because Egypt are determined not to lose this match and are keen to top the group.
