Argentina v Switzerland preview
Argentina have once again narrowly avoided elimination. The reigning world champions staged a fine comeback against Egypt in the round of 16 after falling 0–2 behind. Ultimately, it was a powerful header from Enzo Fernández that secured a 3–2 victory for La Albiceleste. Meanwhile, Switzerland are proving themselves to be a rock-solid and formidable side. Following their 2–0 victory over Algeria, the Swiss also saw off Colombia, who were defeated on penalties. Will Argentina continue to escape, or will they come unstuck against Switzerland?
Current Form & Team News
Argentina
As reigning world champions, Argentina are once again among the favourites for the World Cup title. Yet they are far from convincing at the moment. So far, the defending champions have benefited from several controversial decisions in their favour, and the team looks rather shaky defensively. Conceding four goals in two matches against Cape Verde and Egypt is simply too many. At the same time, Lionel Messi continues to make the difference with his class and goals. As a result, Argentina’s matches are almost always a spectacle. Will they put in a more focused performance against Switzerland?
Switzerland
Switzerland are emerging as one of the most consistent teams in this World Cup. The team is rock-solid; they concede hardly any chances and switch play at lightning speed as soon as space opens up. What’s more, the Swiss have nerves of steel, as was evident in their penalty shoot-out victory against Colombia. With eleven matches in a row without defeat, confidence is high. It is with good reason that Argentina has been warned, as Switzerland has all the ingredients to give the defending champions another particularly difficult evening. They will, however, be hoping that Johan Manzambi has recovered from a minor injury. He missed the match against Colombia.
Head-to-Head
Although Argentina and Switzerland do not face each other very often, their head-to-head record favours the South Americans. Argentina have never lost to the Swiss and, for example, came out on top during the 2014 World Cup. It was only deep into extra time that Ángel Di María, following a build-up by Lionel Messi, decided the match in favour of the eventual finalists. Switzerland will still remember that painful elimination and now has the chance to seek sporting revenge.
Expected line-ups
Argentina (4-4-2):
E. Martínez, Molina, Romero, L. Martínez, Tagliafico, De Paul, Fernández, Paredes, Mac Allister, Messi, Martinez
Switzerland (4-3-3):
Kobel, Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodríguez, Zakaria, Freuler, Xhaka, Rieder, Embolo, Ndoye
Argentina - Switzerland betting tips
Betting tip 1: Both Teams to Score - YES
Argentina have struggled to keep a clean sheet. Just look at their last three matches, in which Jordan, Cape Verde and Egypt all managed to beat the Argentine goalkeeper. Add to that the fact that Switzerland transition from defence to attack at lightning speed and possess plenty of pace and quality, with players such as Dan Ndoye and Breel Embolo, to create chances even against the defending champions. We therefore expect both teams to score. ‘Both teams to score – YES’ gives you odds of 2.10.
Betting tip 2: Enzo Fernández to have more than 0.5 shots on target
One of the standout players for Argentina is Enzo Fernández, Chelsea’s tough-tackling midfielder. He scored the winning goal against Egypt and has already had two shots on target against Cape Verde. We reckon he’ll do the same against Switzerland and get at least one shot on Kobel’s goal. If Enzo Fernández has more than 0.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 2.60.
Argentina v Switzerland Prediction
Final score: Argentina v Switzerland 1–1
We expect a tight and tactical quarter-final. Switzerland have proved particularly difficult to break down in this World Cup and concede hardly any chances, whilst Argentina, by contrast, have shown themselves to be vulnerable at the back. The defending champions will therefore play more cautiously than in previous matches. It looks set to be a contest in which the finer details will make all the difference. If you ask us, this match won’t be decided within ninety minutes. Our prediction: 1–1, followed by extra time to decide the winner.
