United States v Australia preview

Current Form & Team News

It’s clear that both the United States and Australia are in good form at the moment. It’s no coincidence that they beat Paraguay and Turkey respectively. This means a place in the knockout stages is very much within reach. Read on for the latest news on both teams.

United States

It was clear from the outset that the United States, with Malik Tillman, Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Sergiño Dest, possessed the necessary qualities. This was immediately evident against Paraguay, with, amongst other things, two goals from striker Folarin Balogun. The AS Monaco striker showed that he is rightly Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice centre-forward, which is, of course, less good news for Ricardo Pepi. Can the Americans beat the team from Down Under again?

Australia

Australia often takes part in the World Cup, but time and again expectations are low for the Socceroos. Yet, during the World Cup in Qatar, they actually managed to reach the next round. It looks as though they might well do so again this World Cup, having beaten Turkey 2–0 against all odds. Admittedly, the Turks were having an off day, but there was nothing to fault in the Ozzies’ sharpness. Will they be able to keep this up against the United States? And will they keep things tight at the back again?

Head-to-Head

The United States and Australia have faced each other twice in the past. That’s surprising, as you’d expect them to have met more often. The US have the upper hand and have come out on top on both occasions. Just under ten months ago, Team USA won 2-1, whilst 15 years prior to that they had already won 3-1. Of course, this offers no guarantee for the upcoming match, but for the time being, the US looks the stronger side.

United States v Australia betting tips

Betting tip 1: Both teams to score – YES

The United States’ first match has got everyone looking forward to another game from the host nation. We fully agree with this and think they’ll score several times. However, we also believe that the US defence looks vulnerable, whilst Australia are deadly effective. We therefore think both teams will find the net. Both teams to score – YES gives you odds of 1.93.

Betting tip 2: Over 1.5 shots on target – Folarin Balogun

Against Paraguay, it was Folarin Balogun in particular who impressed for the United States. With a total of two goals and three shots on target, he was a real thorn in the side of the South American defence. We believe he will put in a similar performance and play a key role against Australia too, so we’re backing the striker to have at least two shots on target. If Folarin Balogun has more than 1.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 2.14.

Expected line-ups

United States (4-3-3)

Freese, Robinson, Ream, Freeman, Dest, Adams, Richards, Tilman, Pulisic, McKennie, Balogun

Australia: (4-3-3)

Ryan, Bos, Burgess, Circati, Italiano, Irvine, Souttar, O’Neill, Irankunda, Toure, Metcalfe

Prediction: United States v Australia

** Final score: United States 2–1 Australia **
We’re predicting a 2–1 win for the United States. They’ve made an excellent start to the tournament, but Australia have shown that they’re very hard to beat.
