Portugal v Uzbekistan preview

After dropping points against DR Congo, Portugal seem unable to afford another slip-up. Cristiano Ronaldo’s side boast plenty of individual quality and will be looking to take the initiative straight away against Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan showed fighting spirit against Colombia, but were outclassed defensively by a stronger opponent. It was clear to see that, on paper, there was a significant gap in quality, making Portugal the clear favourites. Will Portugal live up to their status as favourites?

Current Form & Team News

Portugal

Portugal got off to a disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup with a 1-1 draw against the D.R. Congo. The Portuguese dominated large parts of the match and took the lead through João Neves, but failed to capitalise on their advantage. Defensively, Portugal were caught out on a number of occasions, allowing the Africans to stay in the game for a long time and eventually score the equaliser. Cristiano Ronaldo, in particular – still the team’s biggest star – came in for a lot of criticism. Will the manager dare to substitute him this time if he doesn’t perform to his usual standard?

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan began the 2026 World Cup with a 1–3 defeat against Colombia. The team managed to score a fine goal and showed some neat football at times, but defensively they struggled greatly with the speed and individual quality of the Colombians – particularly a player like Luis Díaz. Uzbekistan were regularly caught out, particularly during transitions. There were positives in attack, however, as they scored their first ever World Cup goal. Nevertheless, Fabio Cannavaro’s side will need to be just that little bit sharper defensively against the Southern Europeans. Might they pull off a massive upset?

Head-to-Head

Portugal and Uzbekistan are meeting for the first time in history. There is therefore no previous record of matches between the two sides to draw on.

Predicted line-ups

Portugal (4-3-3):

Diogo Costa, Nuno Mendes, Gonçalo Inácio, Ruben Dias, João Cancelo, João Neves, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pedro Neto

Uzbekistan (4-3-3):

Yusupov, Ashurmatov, Hamraliev, Sayfiev, Shukurov, Khusanov, Mozgovoy, Khamrobek, Urunov, Shomurodov, Fayzullaev

Portugal v Uzbekistan betting tips

Betting tip 1: Over 0.5 shots on target – João Neves

João Neves is increasingly showing, both at PSG and for Portugal, that he likes to get forward. In the opening match against DR Congo, too, the midfielder was often found near the goal and took a shot whenever space opened up. It’s no coincidence that he was the only goalscorer for the Portuguese. We reckon he’ll make his mark again against Uzbekistan. A bet on João Neves to have more than 0.5 shots on target at Oranje Palace will earn you odds of 2.10.

Betting tip 2: Portugal to win and keep a clean sheet

On paper, Portugal are a cut above Uzbekistan. The Portuguese possess plenty of quality and their defensive organisation is usually well organised. Uzbekistan made a mediocre impression in their opening match and struggled greatly to contain a strong Colombia side. We therefore expect Portugal to win this match and keep a clean sheet, particularly as the Portuguese defence is usually rock-solid. Portugal to win and keep a clean sheet gives you odds of 1.73 at Oranje Palace.

Prediction: Portugal v Uzbekistan

** Final score: Portugal 3–0 Uzbekistan **
We expect Portugal to bounce back after their unnecessary draw against DR Congo and have no trouble against Uzbekistan. The difference in quality is clear, which is why we’re predicting a resounding 3–0 victory for Portugal.
