Norway v England preview

Is football coming home? Or will the Vikings keep their dream alive by reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup? Below, we tell you more about both countries.

Current Form & Team News

Norway

Norway is enjoying its best ever World Cup campaign and has emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. The Scandinavians finished second in their group behind France and went on to beat Ivory Coast (2–1) and hot favourites Brazil (2–1). The victory over Brazil was particularly impressive, with Erling Haaland the star of the show, scoring twice. Add to that Norway’s physical strength and direct style of play, and it’s clear they can beat anyone.

England

England seem to be hitting form at just the right time. Thomas Tuchel’s side won the group stage without suffering a single defeat and have since held their own in the knockout stages. A hard-fought 2–1 victory over DR Congo was followed by an entertaining 3–2 win over Mexico, in which the English once again showcased their attacking prowess. Whereas it had previously been Harry Kane who had set his country alight, that honour now went to Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder scored twice within a minute, bringing the Estadio Azteca to a complete standstill. Can he do the same against the Norwegians?

Head-to-Head

The head-to-head record favours England. Of the 23 previous meetings, the Three Lions have won no fewer than fifteen times, whilst Norway have recorded just four victories. Four matches ended in a draw.

The most recent encounter took place in March 2022. England came out on top 2–1 in a friendly international. The two nations have faced each other just once at a World Cup. During the 1998 World Cup, England won 2–0 in the group stage thanks to goals from Darren Anderton and David Beckham.

Predicted line-ups

Norway (4-3-3):

Nyland, Ryerson, Ajer, Heggem, Wolfe, Ødegaard, Berge, Patrick Berg, Sørloth, Haaland, Nusa

England (4-2-3-1):

Pickford, Konsa, Stones, Guéhi, O’Reilly, Rice, Anderson, Saka, Bellingham, Gordon, Kane

Norway v England betting tips

Betting tip 1: Over 3.5 goals

Whilst many quarter-finals tend to be tight affairs, Norway and England look set to provide a real spectacle. The Norwegians knocked Brazil out with a 2-1 win, whilst England beat Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling match. With players such as Haaland, Sørloth, Kane and Bellingham, there’s a good chance both teams will produce another high-scoring encounter. Over 3.5 goals in the Norway v Brazil match will earn you odds of 2.75.

Betting tip 2: Over 1.5 shots on target by Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland is in sensational form. The Norwegian striker, who plays for Manchester City, scored both goals against Brazil and has now netted seven times in this World Cup. His physical strength and finishing ability in the penalty area make him a constant threat to any defence. Of course, the English will be keeping a close eye on him, but we reckon he’ll still manage at least two shots or headers on target. If Erling Braut Haaland has more than 1.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 1.87.

Norway v England Prediction

Final score: Norway 2–3 England
Norway have now shown that they are capable of springing surprises, but England have more experience and individual quality. We expect an entertaining quarter-final with chances at both ends, in which the Three Lions will ultimately make the difference. Harry Kane and Erling Haaland will no doubt be on the scoresheet regularly. We predict a spectacular 3-2 victory for England.
