Don’t be surprised if you hear quite a bit of noise on Monday night, as the Estadio Azteca is set to unleash a hurricane of sound. That’s because the round of 16 match between Mexico and England is on the programme – a fixture in which atmosphere, quality and excitement are guaranteed. The Mexicans are playing on home soil and can once again count on the massive support of their passionate fans, whilst England, with a squad full of top players, are chasing their first World Cup title since 1966. In this preview, you can read more about both countries, their head-to-head record and, of course, our Mexico v England prediction.

In that case, your bet is not yet lost. If Marcus Rashford comes on as a substitute and does take a shot on goal, that will still count towards your bet. A handy feature that could make all the difference, particularly during the World Cup, with all the substitutions.

Mexico v England preview

On paper, England are the favourites, but this match is far from a foregone conclusion. This is particularly because Mexico have yet to concede a single goal and are playing in front of their home crowd. That has already resulted in several impressive performances during this World Cup. England have more individual quality, but will be under pressure from the very first minute by a passionate crowd and a team that never gives up. Here’s a brief look at both teams.

Current Form & Team News

Mexico

Mexico is currently one of the strongest teams in the 2026 World Cup. El Tri finished the group stage with the maximum haul of nine points. The team began with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, followed by a 1-0 win against South Korea, and rounded off a perfect group stage with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic. As a result, Mexico qualified for the knockout stages as group winners.

Ecuador awaited them in the round of 16, but they cleared that hurdle convincingly too. Thanks to a 2–0 victory, Mexico progressed to the quarter-finals without conceding a single goal. Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones, in particular, are in fine form, whilst captain and former Ajax player Edson Álvarez is also playing a key role in midfield. Can they do it against the Three Lions too?

England

England had an inconsistent group stage, but did finish top of Group L. The team kicked off with a spectacular 4–2 victory over Croatia, then put in a disappointing 0–0 draw against Ghana, and rounded off the group stage with a clinical 2–0 win over Panama. This secured first place for England.

In the round of 16, England had to dig deep against DR Congo. The Africans took a surprise lead, but Harry Kane then made the difference with two goals, leading Thomas Tuchel’s side to a 2-1 victory. His second goal, in particular, was one to remember. And yet there are concerns for England, particularly in defence. Against Congo, they conceded more chances than they would have liked. Will they be able to keep a clean sheet against Mexico?

Head-to-Head

Mexico and England have faced each other on several occasions in the past. Historically, the English have the better record, but the two nations have only met once before at a World Cup. In the group stage of the 1958 World Cup, the match ended goalless at 0–0. This time, the situation is different. Mexico are playing on home soil at a roaring Estadio Azteca, whilst England must adapt to the altitude of Mexico City. And let’s be honest: with the 1986 World Cup final still fresh in their minds, England don’t have the fondest of memories.

Predicted line-ups

Mexico (4-3-3):

Rangel, Sánchez, Montes, Vásquez, Gallardo, Lira, Romo, Mora, Alvarado, Jiménez, Quiñones

England (4-3-3):

Pickford, Spence, Konsa, Guéhi, O’Reilly, Rice, Anderson, Bellingham, Madueke, Kane, Rashford

Mexico v England betting tips

Betting tip 1: Both teams to score – YES

Mexico are playing with great courage in this World Cup and have already had the home crowd on their feet on several occasions. At the same time, England’s defence does not look infallible. DR Congo have also managed to cause Thomas Tuchel’s side some trouble. On the other hand, with Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon, England almost always create chances themselves. Both teams to score – YES therefore looks like an interesting bet. This gives you odds of 1.97.

Betting tip 2: Julián Quiñones to score or provide an assist

Of course, most of the attention is focused on England’s star striker, but what about Mexico’s left winger? Julián Quiñones, originally from Colombia, is having an incredible tournament, having provided one assist and scored three goals so far. We reckon he’ll be a real threat again and will be involved in a goal. If Julián Quiñones scores or provides an assist, you’ll get odds of 2.95.

Mexico v England Prediction

Final score: Mexico 1–2 England
This round of 16 tie promises to be one of the best matches of this stage. Mexico are playing with immense confidence, are buoyed by the support of over 80,000 fans and are fully accustomed to the conditions in Mexico City. England, on the other hand, have more individual quality, but need to adapt to the altitude and are currently relying heavily on Harry Kane. What’s our prediction? England will win 2–1 and, after a spectacular match, qualify for the quarter-finals.
