Mexico v Ecuador preview

Whilst Mexico comfortably made it through the group stage, Ecuador scraped through by the skin of their teeth with a very late victory over Germany. Does this put the Mexicans in the driving seat? Or is the win over Die Mannschaft the boost that will carry Ecuador further in the tournament? Here’s a brief look at both nations.

Current Form & Team News

Mexico

Rarely has Mexico started a World Cup in such a relaxed manner. The opening match of the tournament was won very convincingly – and, above all, comfortably – by a score of 2–0 against South Africa. Not long after, South Korea were also beaten with a 1–0 victory. With the Mexicans having long since secured their place in the next round, the Czech Republic were also thrashed 3–0. This shows that the defence is rock-solid, whilst matches are being won in a solid, controlled manner. Will they keep a clean sheet against Ecuador too?

Ecuador

After two matches, it looked very much as though Ecuador, despite high expectations, would be flying back to South America early. They conceded a late draw against Ivory Coast, whilst, miraculously, they failed to secure a win against Curaçao. With just one point from two matches, they had to beat Germany. They eventually managed to do so thanks to a clever goal from Gonzalo Plata, the striker from Brazilian side Flamengo. Will this victory provide the boost that the team, led by the decidedly striking head coach Sebastián Beccacece, needed?

Head-to-Head

Mexico and Ecuador have faced each other more than twenty times in the past, with the Mexicans clearly having the upper hand. They have beaten the South Americans on 13 occasions. Interestingly, the last three encounters ended in draws, with very few goals scored. It therefore seems that both teams are fairly evenly matched.

Expected line-ups

Mexico (4-3-3):

Rangel, Gallardo, Vasquez, Montes, Sanchez, Romo, Lira, Gutierrez, Quiñones, Jimenez, Alvarado

Ecuador (3-4-2-1):

Galindez, Hincapie, Pacho, Ordonez, Estupinan, Franco, Caicedo, Preciado, Plata, Yeboah, Valencia

Mexico v Ecuador betting tips

Betting tip 1: Julian Quiñones to score or provide an assist

One of Mexico’s standout players is actually a native of Colombia. However, thanks to his parents, Julian Quinones holds a Mexican passport and is making the nation proud with his skills on the pitch. It’s no surprise that he scored against both South Africa and the Czech Republic. We expect the winger to play a key role once again and believe he will score or provide an assist against Ecuador. This will earn you odds of 2.80.

Betting Tip 2: The match will end in a draw

Betting on a draw is always a risk, but we’re willing to take it in this fixture. Both sides seem to be evenly matched and are very solid defensively. Furthermore, the last three meetings between them have ended in draws. With both teams boasting solid defences, we believe Mexico v Ecuador will end in a draw. This gives you odds of 2.85.

Mexico v Ecuador Prediction

** Final score: Mexico 1–1 Ecuador**
As mentioned, we expect a closely contested match in which both teams will be keen to make life difficult for each other. However, we anticipate some certainty in both sides’ attacking play, meaning that it will ultimately come down to penalties to decide the outcome.
