France v Sweden preview
On paper, France look the clear favourites to win this match. But with strikers like Victor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, the Scandinavians can cause problems for anyone. Here’s a brief overview of both countries.
Current Form & Team News
France
Right up until the final group match, it was Kylian Mbappé who stole the show with no fewer than four goals in his first two matches at the 2026 World Cup. This also saw him draw level with Miroslav Klose’s record goal tally. Against Norway, however, it was another star who stepped up. Ousmane Dembélé put in a superb performance and scored three goals. This puts him on four points as well, placing him amongst the top contenders at the 2026 World Cup. The question is: who will stand up to Sweden?
Sweden
Sweden had an extremely remarkable group stage. It was already quite a surprise that they were even taking part in the World Cup, but after their 5–1 victory over Tunisia, they actually began to believe they could survive the group stage. After the 1–5 defeat to the Netherlands, they were back down to earth with a bump, but the 1–1 draw against Japan gave them a much-needed confidence boost. In that match, they showed they could play good football and keep things a little tighter at the back – something that is absolutely essential against a team like France. Will Sweden hold out for long?
It will come as no surprise that the French have had the upper hand in this fixture. They have, in fact, won eleven times. Nevertheless, the Swedes have also come out on top on six occasions. Sweden’s fondest memory is, of course, the 2–0 victory at Euro 2012, in which Zlatan Ibrahimovic, amongst others, scored a goal.
Predicted line-ups
France (4–3–3):
Maignan, Digne, Saliba, Upamecano, Koundé, Rabiot, Kone, Doué, Olise, Dembélé, Mbappé
Sweden (3-4-3):
Widell Zetterstrom, Gudmundsson, Lindelof, Lagerbielke, Stroud, Ayari, Bergvall, Bernhardsson, Isak, Gyökeres, Elanga
France v Sweden betting tips
Betting tip 1: 3-way handicap -1 for France
In fact, we expect nothing less than a comfortable victory for France. France have already won three times by a margin of at least two goals and face Sweden, a side that, on paper, is weaker than Senegal or Norway. Add to that Sweden’s heavy defeat against the Netherlands, and we believe this match will also be won by the French by a margin of at least two goals. A 3-way handicap of -1 for France gives you odds of 1.64.
Betting tip 2: Ousmane Dembélé to score from outside the box
Against Norway, Ousmane Dembélé was in a league of his own. The PSG winger scored three goals, two of which were typical of his style – struck with his left foot from outside the penalty area. We reckon the Swedish side will come under heavy pressure and that the right winger will do it again. A goal from outside the box by Ousmane Dembélé will earn you odds of 5.50.
France v Sweden Prediction
** Final score: France 4–1 Sweden**
We expect a very one-sided match in which France will dominate for the full 90 minutes and score plenty of goals once again. That said, we do expect Sweden’s formidable attack to score at least one goal.
