France v Spain preview

Who will reach the final of the World Cup, the biggest football tournament on the planet? Will it be the French or the Spanish? Here’s a brief look at both nations.

Current Form & Team News

France

We haven’t had much to say about them in recent years, but there’s no getting round the fact that it’s a real pleasure to watch France’s matches at the moment. Every match has been a thoroughly deserved victory, and the game against Morocco showed that taking on Les Bleus is almost a lost cause. Especially as Kylian Mbappé is in the form of his life and has already scored eight goals. Add to that the talents of Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise, and you have the ideal attacking line-up. Can they cause the Spaniards any trouble?

Spain

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt from the Spain v Belgium match, it’s that it is indeed possible to breach the Spanish defence. Luis de la Fuente’s side conceded their first goal of the 2026 World Cup and got off lightly thanks to a blunder by the Belgian goalkeeper. In short, Belgium certainly had the potential to achieve more. And that is precisely what is causing concern in Spain. It is certainly not clear that Lamine Yamal is yet in the required form. Will he manage to find his form in the semi-final? Or will they once again have to pin their hopes on a moment of brilliance from super-sub Mikel Merino?

Head-to-Head

France and Spain have faced each other 37 times in the past. The Spaniards came out on top on 17 occasions, whilst France won 13 times. This means that seven matches ended in a draw. Remarkably, the last two editions were won by the Spaniards, with their 5–4 victory in the Nations League standing out most. Will we see another high-scoring fixture?

Expected line-ups

France (4–2–3–1):

Maignan, Digne, Saliba, Upamecano, Koundé, Koné, Rabiot, Doué, Olise, Dembélé, Mbappé

Spain (4-3-3):

Simon, Cucurella, Laporte, Cubarsí, Porro, Rodri, Fabían Ruiz, Pedri, Olmo, Yamal, Oyarzabal

France - Spain betting tips

Betting tip 1: Over 2.5 goals

To be honest, we can’t wait for this cracker at the 2026 World Cup. We reckon both teams will go all out on the attack and score one or more goals. That’s one of the reasons we’re expecting an open match that could go either way. We’re therefore going for over 2.5 goals, a bet that offers odds of 1.79.An interesting detail: this has happened in their last three head-to-head matches.

Betting tip 2: Desiré Doué to have more than 0.5 shots on target

As well as Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, France have another forward you mustn’t take your eyes off for a moment. We’re talking about Desiré Doué. The youngster from PSG is having an excellent tournament, but is currently sharing the bench with Bradley Barcola when it comes to a starting place. He does, however, have a shot on target in almost every match, including two against Morocco. We reckon he’ll also have at least one shot on target against Spain. If Desiré Doué has more than 0.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 1.70.

France v Spain prediction

Final score: France 3–2 Spain
As mentioned, we’re expecting an open match with plenty of goals. However, we think France are just a cut above the rest, meaning they’ll win 3–2 in spectacular fashion.
