One of the most talked-about and energetic managers on the Dutch football scene is Henk de Jong. Last year, he led his club, SC Cambuur, to second place in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, but decided to take a step back nonetheless. He is now an assistant manager and will mainly be working behind the scenes.

It is clear, however, that something needs to happen quickly in Leeuwarden, particularly as pre-season did not go particularly well. The team lost all four of their final pre-season matches, with the 1–2 defeat against Greek side Volos being a particularly disappointing result. Will they pick up their first points in their new stadium?

Excelsior Rotterdam

Whilst SC Cambuur know they have their work cut out for them, things are going excellently for Excelsior. At least, during pre-season they played five matches, all of which ended in victory. Remarkably, the Kralingers played four friendly matches against teams from the KKD, beating De Graafschap, Heracles Almelo, NAC Breda and FC Dordrecht.

Remarkably, the fifth friendly was against Cambuur. That match was also won by the Rotterdam side. Many eyes will be on Gyan de Regt. He scored four times in the last two friendlies and seems assured of a place in the starting line-up. Will he do the same against SC Cambuur?

It will come as no surprise to anyone that this is not the first time SC Cambuur and Excelsior Rotterdam have faced each other. Most of these matches have taken place in the Dutch second tier. We’re predicting a narrow victory for Excelsior. Mainly because they seem to be in good form and, with Gyan de Regt, appear to have a striker who’s on top of his game. It’s a sad but true fact: we believe SC Cambuur will lose the opening match of the 2026–2027 Eredivisie season.
