Belgium v Iran preview

Belgium is still a strong footballing nation, but unfortunately its glory days are behind it. This was clearly evident against Egypt, where the defence didn’t always look particularly solid. Iran caused something of a surprise with a strong attacking display, scoring twice against New Zealand. However, they also conceded two goals. What does this mean for the Belgium v Iran match? Read more about both teams here.

Current Form & Team News

Belgium

Belgium found themselves trailing Egypt for much of the match and visibly struggled to take control of the game. Thanks in part to veteran substitute Romelu Lukaku, the Red Devils managed to salvage a draw. With playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and the creative Jeremy Doku in the line-up, they will be looking to secure their first victory of this World Cup against Iran. In a group that also includes New Zealand, Belgium can really not afford any more slip-ups if they want to finish top of the group. Will Belgium buckle under the pressure, or will the Red Devils manage to turn the tide in time?

Iran

Iran showed enormous resilience against New Zealand. Despite the difficult circumstances off the pitch, the Iranians kept fighting and managed to come from behind twice. Veteran Ramin Rezaeian was one of Team Melli’s standout performers, scoring a goal and putting in a strong performance. Against Belgium, however, they face an opponent of a different calibre. Iran will need to tighten up their defence in particular if they are to put the Red Devils under pressure.

Head-to-Head

Belgium and Iran have never played each other before. As a result, the head-to-head record is irrelevant to this match.

Belgium v Iran betting tips

Betting tip 1: Both teams to score – YES

Belgium look vulnerable at the back and have conceded in six of their last ten international matches. Iran have scored in seven of their last ten matches and showed great resilience against New Zealand. A goal at both ends therefore seems likely. ‘Both teams to score – YES’ will earn you odds of 2.04 at Oranje Palace.

Betting tip 2: Over 2.5 goals

Belgium have been playing a striking number of high-scoring matches recently and, with players such as Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku, possess plenty of attacking quality. At the same time, their defence hasn’t always looked particularly solid, meaning the Red Devils regularly concede goals. As both teams will be going all out for the win following their previous draw, we expect an open match with plenty of attacking intent. We are therefore backing at least three goals in the Belgium v Iran match. This gives you odds of 1.82 at Oranje Palace.

Belgium v Iran Prediction

** Final score: Belgium 3–1 Iran **
We expect a Belgian victory, but we can see that they are vulnerable at the back. Furthermore, Iran are far from a team that crumble under pressure, and so a 3–1 win for the Red Devils certainly doesn’t seem far-fetched to us.
