The Australia v Egypt match is the sort of fixture you’d expect to see in a friendly international somewhere in the middle of the season. Yet this is actually a knockout match in the 2026 World Cup. Both nations fought their way through to the next round, partly thanks to victories over Turkey and New Zealand respectively. We’ll tell you more about this match and share our Australia v Egypt prediction. Will Mohamed Salah pull it off.

Current Form & Team News

Australia

It’s a remarkable achievement that Australia have once again reached the knockout stages of a World Cup. They did the same at the last World Cup in Qatar. It’s particularly impressive because the Socceroos actually have very few big-name players, and none of them play for a top club. The only one we’re really familiar with here in the Netherlands is Jordan Bos. The Feyenoord left-back has been playing on the right flank in recent matches and has made quite an impact going forward. Could he possibly play a key role in the match against Egypt? It’s clear that the team from Down Under are set to make it another hard-fought contest. Something they’re generally brilliant at.

Egypt

What a relief it was after the final whistle in the New Zealand v Egypt match. The North Africans had found themselves 0–1 down, but after 90 minutes of football they still celebrated a 3–1 victory. This was Egypt’s first ever victory at a World Cup. What’s more, thanks to this victory, they went straight through to the next round. That is not illogical in itself, as, in the form of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, they are fielding two absolute stars for the first time in years. Can they lead the Land of the Pharaohs to victory against Australia as well? Or will it be Trezeguet once again who takes centre stage?

Head-to-Head

Some 16 years ago, Australia and Egypt played their only ever match against each other. In that friendly, Egypt came out on top with a 3-0 victory.

Predicted line-ups

Australia (4-3-3):

Ryan, Degenek, Souttar, Burgess, Bos, O’Neill, Irvine, Metcalfe, Leckie, Irankunda, Mabil

Egypt (4-3-3):

Shobeir, Fatouh, Fathy, Ibrahim, Hany, Attia, Ashour, Lasheen, Trezeguet, Marmoush, Salah

Australia v Egypt betting tips

Betting tip 1: Trezeguet to have more than 0.5 shots on target

Imagine being named after one of the greatest French strikers in football history. It was the Egyptian player Trezeguet who experienced this. The striker, whose real name is Mahmoud Hassan, plays for Al Ahly and is having an excellent World Cup. He scored against New Zealand and also had a shot on target against Iran. We believe Egypt will create chances against Australia and think the striker will play a part in this. If Trezeguet has more than 0.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 2.07.

Betting tip 2: Under 0.5 goals for Australia

We think Australia are in for a very tough match. Mainly because the Ozzies are struggling to score goals. In the group stage, they failed to score against both Paraguay and the USA. We think they won’t manage it against Egypt either, just like sixteen years ago. If Australia score fewer than 0.5 goals against Egypt, you’ll get odds of 2.38.

Australia v Egypt Prediction

** Final score: Australia 0–2 Egypt **
We expect Egypt to be the better side in this match. This is mainly due to the lack of firepower in the Australian attack and the fact that Egypt have a number of excellent strikers.
