Argentina v Egypt preview

Two icons, one ticket to the quarter-finals. Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah are now among the veterans of top-flight international football, but they are proving once again at the 2026 World Cup that pure class is not bound by age. The Argentine remains the mastermind behind the world champions’ play, whilst Salah can still make the difference for Egypt with a single moment of brilliance. The 2026 World Cup will therefore provide the backdrop for a clash in which two giants face each other one last time.

Current Form & Team News

Argentina

Argentina made a convincing impression in the group stage with three wins and just one goal conceded. However, in the knockout stage against Cape Verde, it became clear that even the world champions’ defence is vulnerable when the pressure mounts. Thanks in part to the individual brilliance of Lionel Messi, Lisandro Martínez and Christian Romero, the team still managed to come out on top with a 3–2 victory. Against Egypt, Argentina will once again be looking to take the initiative, but will need to be far more solid at the back.

Egypt

Egypt qualified for the knockout stages as runners-up in their group and subsequently demonstrated a rock-solid mentality. Against Australia, the team held out for over 120 minutes, after which the penalty shoot-out was decided in Egypt’s favour. And that is a remarkable achievement, given that Egypt had not won a single World Cup match before the start of the 2026 World Cup. This year, however, with Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in their ranks, Egypt have the pace to pose a threat on the counter-attack. The North Africans are therefore expected to defend compactly against Argentina once again and wait patiently for their chances.

Head-to-Head

A glance through the history books reveals very few previous encounters between Argentina and Egypt. That is precisely what makes this round of 16 tie particularly interesting: the two nations have hardly faced each other at the highest international level. Their last meeting ended in a 2-0 victory for Argentina, but that match dates back to 2018 and was a friendly. The two nations have never faced each other at the World Cup, meaning the 2026 World Cup will mark a new chapter in this fixture.

Predicted line-ups

Argentina (4-3-3):

E. Martínez, Molina, Romero, L. Martínez, Tagliafico, De Paul, Fernández, MacAllister, Messi, Lautaro, Álvarez

Egypt (4-2-3-1):

Shobeir, Hany, Ibrahim, Hafez, Fathi, Ateya, Ashour, Salah, Marmoush, Ziko, Trezeguet

Argentina v Egypt betting tips

Betting tip 1: Argentina to win by a two-goal margin

There’s no getting round the fact that Argentina are the clear favourites. And yet La Albiceleste struggled to beat Cape Verde. We reckon Lionel Scaloni’s side have been given a wake-up call and will win this match by at least two goals. Just as they did against Algeria, Austria and Jordan. A 3-way handicap of -1 for Argentina gives you odds of 2.05.

Betting tip 2: Lionel Messi to have more than 2.5 shots on target

Naturally, all eyes are once again on Lionel Messi. He remains the World Cup’s top scorer and takes multiple shots on target in every match. He did so four times against Algeria and Austria, whilst he finished with six shots on target against Cape Verde. We reckon he’ll be a threat again against Egypt, with at least three shots on target. Are you up for the challenge? If Lionel Messi has more than 2.5 shots on target, you’ll get odds of 2.50.

Prediction: Argentina v Egypt

Final score: Argentina 3–1 Egypt
With Salah and Marmoush, Egypt have the firepower to hurt Argentina on the counter-attack, but over ninety minutes the gap in quality simply seems too great. The South Americans have more creativity in midfield, greater individual quality up front, and know better than anyone how to control high-pressure matches. We therefore expect Egypt to hold out for a long time, but ultimately to suffer a heavy defeat.
