Portugal v Spain preview

Portugal and Spain have been among Europe’s top sides for many years and know each other inside out. Indeed, a large proportion of the squads face each other every season in La Liga or the Champions League, meaning surprises are virtually impossible. Yet both countries seem to be approaching this round of 16 tie with a very different mindset. Portugal narrowly avoided elimination in the previous round thanks to a late 2-1 victory over Croatia, whilst Spain played perhaps their best match of the tournament, comfortably beating Austria.

Current Form & Team News

Portugal

Portugal had an up-and-down group stage, with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, a convincing 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan and a goalless draw against Colombia. In the knockout stages, Roberto Martínez’s side narrowly beat Croatia. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first ever goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup, after which his substitute, Gonçalo Ramos, headed home the winning goal – 2–1 – deep into injury time. Portugal then miraculously weathered the Croatian storm and have therefore progressed to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Spain

Spain took a while to get going but seem to be improving with every match. A goalless draw against Cape Verde was followed by convincing victories over Saudi Arabia (4–0) and Uruguay (1–0). This, of course, secured them top spot in the group.

In the previous round, La Roja perhaps made the biggest impression of all the nations by beating Austria 3-0. Thanks in part to two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, Luis de la Fuente’s side made their mark on the tournament. However, it is to be hoped that Lamine Yamal can find his true form. He remains one of the few big stars who has yet to show what he is capable of.

Head-to-Head

Portugal and Spain know each other better than anyone. The neighbouring countries have faced each other more than forty times, with Spain historically coming out on top. Yet those figures do not tell the whole story. The most recent top-of-the-table clash was the UEFA Nations League final in 2025. After a thrilling 2–2 draw, Portugal ultimately came out on top on penalties. This underlines just how small the differences between the two nations are. This edition of El Derbi Ibérico also looks set to be another match in which the finer details will make all the difference.

Predicted line-ups

Portugal (4-3-3):

Costa, Cancelo, Dias, Veiga, Mendes, Neves, Vitinha, Fernandes, Neto, Ronaldo, Leão

Spain (4-3-3):

Simón, Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella, Rodri, Pedri, Olmo, Baena, Oyarzabal, Yamal

Portugal v Spain betting tips

Betting tip 1: Full-time result – Spain to win

Spain, alongside France, currently look the most reliable side at the 2026 World Cup. La Roja remain unbeaten and made a strong impression in the previous round with a convincing 3-0 victory over Austria. Portugal may have survived a thriller against Croatia, but they squandered numerous chances and had to wait until deep into injury time for the winning goal. Based on their current form, we reckon Spain are best placed to settle this match within 90 minutes. A Spain win will earn you odds of 1.91.

Betting tip 2: Marc Cucurella will provide an assist

One of Spain’s standout players is Marc Cucurella. Real Madrid’s brand-new left-back is having a brilliant tournament and is tearing down the flank in every match. In fact, he even provided two assists against Austria. And there should have been many more during the group stage. We reckon he’ll make his mark again against Portugal and provide another assist. A bet on Marc Cucurella providing an assist gives you odds of 8.50.

Prediction: Portugal v Spain

Final score: Portugal v Spain 0–1
It promises to be a top-class chess match, in which the finer details will make all the difference. Portugal have experienced players who can strike out of nowhere, but Spain simply look more stable and harder to beat in this World Cup. We think Spain will win by a narrow margin and are backing a 2–1 victory for captain Rodri’s side.
